10:17 < Baldzius> hi mtr
10:18 < koan> good morning guys, anyone knows how can I install t2 from a usb stick instead of a cd-rom?
10:18 < rxr> yes, if the t2 cd is based on grub you can use our iso2stck.sh script to write it to a usb stick
10:18 < rxr> ./misc/archive/iso2stick.sh
10:18 < rxr> (in the t2 source tree)
10:18 < koan> nice, thanks
10:18 < rxr> ./misc/archive/iso2stick.sh the.iso /dev/sdX
10:20 < koan> which t2 cd image do you suggest to use on a modern laptop?
10:20 < rxr> oh - btw. that reminds me to tell you that you probably can not install a 2 cd set easily via a USB stick ...
10:21 < rxr> to you want to install or test ? (or both?)
10:21 < koan> first installation, so more of a test :-)
10:21 < rxr> hm - we still build CDs by default for backward compatibility, and the usual desktop set has 2 cds
10:22 < rxr> I'm afraid I never tested installing from a usb stick ...
10:22 < rxr> the laptop has no CD-ROM ?
10:22 < koan> yes it has, but I prefer usb, mostly I install a distro from a minimal image on usb stick
10:23 < rxr> ic, guess we have to improve t2 install procedure for this case :-(
10:23 < koan> ok
10:24 < koan> maybe I will use a cd-rom then for this time :-)
10:26 < rxr> if you just have some more days for a test, 7.0-final is just some days off
10:26 < koan> ah ok I can wait a few days
10:26 -!- hwinkel [n=hwinkel@p54A752EB.dip.t-dialin.net] has quit [Client Quit]
10:26 < rxr> that is I only have to shake off some powerpc and sparc showstoppers and update the kde3 to 3.5.10 ...
10:27 < koan> what's on the minimal iso btw?
10:27 < rxr> depends if it "just minimal" then it's a minimal text system, includiing gcc & co - or minimal-xorg, then a minimal X.org with twm and xterm ...
10:27 < rxr> (but without overly fancy eye candy)
10:28 < rxr> this includes everything for software development, so enough to rebuild your own t2 with it
10:28 < koan> ok, but once installed I can install all packages I need, right?
10:28 < rxr> (or build additional source packages into the system with the t2 build system)
10:29 < rxr> yes, mostly by building form source with the t2 build system and package repositories
10:29 < rxr> like:
10:29 < rxr> t2-trunk# ./scripts/Emerge-Pkg firefox
10:29 < rxr> checking firefox ... New version (2.0.0.5 -> 3.0.1). Added.
10:29 < koan> ok thanks
10:29 < rxr> checking atk ... New version (1.18.0 -> 1.22.0). Added.

12:36 < koan> rxr: how is the support of wireless network cards in T2?
12:40 < rxr> well - as good as upstream support :-)
12:40 < rxr> and we have quite some additional packages for external modules
12:40 < rxr> externally maintained wireless driver modules
12:41 < koan> sorry for asking all those questions :-)

15:27 < koan> "Load second stage system from network" -> is there a public url I can type in there?
15:28 < koan> I booted a minimal T2 7.0 from usb stick but he doesn't find the stage2 on the usb stick
15:34 < rxr> hm - ah, yes
15:34 < rxr> we only check on cd's in the "classic installer", indeed
15:34 < rxr> there is no public URL, yet (we plan to have one)
15:35 < rxr> I'll make a TODO note to also fix the "classic install" to allow non-CD-ROMs and search on the booted medium first in any case

19:07 < n6pfk> Thanks for the speedy response.
19:07 < rxr> in some days there will be 7.0-final desktop live release
19:08 < n6pfk> I am curious in how minix3 support is doing?
19:08 < rxr> :-)
19:08 < rxr> well - my company focused on another project, so not soo much
19:08 < n6pfk> I would like to play with a micro kernel.
19:08 < rxr> but patched welcome .-9
19:08 < rxr> yeah - I love microkernsl, too :-)
19:09 < rxr> actually adding minix is not too much a problem from the t2 perspective, it mostly that the monolythic minix3 SVN source structure makes external building a little more difficult than it had to be ...
19:09 < rxr> e.g. they have all in a single source tree building everything tightly interlocked ...
19:09 < rxr> quite some work to get into the form of "packages"
19:10 < rxr> (but patches welcome)
19:11 < n6pfk> Thank you, bye

19:17 < Ragnarin> any way to fix this in a general way?
