09:54 < adilix> hi all
09:55 < adilix> what exactly are the cd iso images, do i need them
09:55 < adilix> to start
10:03 <@rxr> the cd isos are pre-built binaries, bootable and installable
10:04 <@rxr> it is most easy to start with them, and just compile what you need on top
10:04 <@rxr> building everything from scratch can be more tricky, if you build on a foreign linux distribution
10:09 < adilix> are the iso cds the rescue binaries, i read in doku about rescue binaries
10:25 < adilix> so i start a download of the iso, i wanted to know if the isos are an environment for starting to build a system without to download additional packages and whats about the scripts are their in the cds
10:47 <@rxr> don't know what rescue binaries you mean
10:47 <@rxr> they are normal system binaries, like Fedora, SuSE, Ubuntu et. al.
10:47 <@rxr> you can use them to bulid source code, to build t2 you need to checkout the t2 source via svn
10:47 <@rxr> svn and all the other tools are included in these isos
10:48 <@rxr> so you can start with "svn checkout ..." after installing
10:48 < CIA-32> rene * r37756 /trunk/package/gnome2/gnumeric/gnumeric.desc: * updated gnumeric (1.10.10 -> 1.10.11)
10:49 <@rxr> http://www.t2-project.org/documentation/buildintro.html
10:50 < CIA-32> rene * r37757 /trunk/package/graphic/gimp/gimp.desc: * updated gimp (2.6.10 -> 2.6.11)
10:53 < adilix> ok thx i understand now, i need a permament internet connection
10:53 <@rxr> not necessarily
10:53 <@rxr> you can Download all in one go
10:54 <@rxr> e.g. before you build a whole target via Download -required
10:56 < adilix> all in one? you mean over 8000 packages
10:58 <@rxr> no, onle those you have selected
10:58 <@rxr> e.g. when you want to build your own cd and select a minimal x desktop only ~300 or so are downloaded
10:59 <@rxr> otherwise, if you start with the binary isos, and just build add-on what you need (e.g. x, firefox, etc.) you use Emerge-Pkg and it only downloads the source and dependencies as needed

11:58 < rogermason> I re-installed 8.0 on my G5. When booting I get the message: drivers/rtc/hctosys.c: unable to open rtc device (rtc0). I also notice that the time is set to the epoch.

16:18 < rxr> rogermason: I think I saw a line already, too
16:18 < rxr> think it went away with a newer kernel
16:27 < rogermason> if is install trunk again, do you have any ideas on getting the kernel to boot?
16:28 < rxr> maybe it is a better option to emerge stuff you need from trunk?
16:28 < rxr> slatest linux kernels appear to have new ppc64 regressions beside this KVM virtualization, they do not run as solid as the 8.0 release iso even for me :-(
16:31 < rogermason> I'm ok building from trunk, but it would be nice to have the machine know what the time is. yesterday when I built cracklib, that pulled in python, which kept doing its configure step in an endless loop because the system time was 1970(?).
16:50 < rxr> ntpdate time.apple.com
16:51 < rxr> the good think with Emerge from trunk is, that you can test multiple kernels / config until one works reliable
16:51 < rxr> currently there appears to be some hiccup with the latest "stable" kernels on ppc64
16:57 < rogermason> thanks, ntpdate works.
17:01 < rogermason> whick package contains the timezone data? /usr/share/zoneinfo/ just contains iso3166.tab and zone.tab and the link from /etc/localtime shows as a dead link.
17:27 < rxr> unfortunately glibc
19:06 < rogermason> :-( that is what I feared from the package matrix. Thanks.
